Definition
The most widely accepted definition of gestational diabetes mellitus is “carbohydrate intolerance of varying degrees of severity with onset or first recognition during pregnancy”   1    2 . The definition applies regardless of treatment method or whether the condition persists after pregnancy. It does not exclude the possibility that unrecognized glucose intolerance may have antedated the pregnancy. Though the definition is simple, there is much controversy concerning the diagnostic methods and criteria as well as the appropriate therapy.
